Submission of Final Basic Assessment Report and Environmental Management Programme and Final Water Use Licence Application Summary Report

Sasol Secunda Operations (SSO) in Govan Mbeki Local Municipality is undertaking an Integrated Regulatory Process (IRP) to support a height increase of the coarse ash stack at their operations outside Secunda and Embalenhle.
The following environmental licences are required:
- Integrated Waste Management Licence (IWML) expansion in terms of the National Environmental Management: Waste Act, Act 59 of 2008 (NEM:WA). The expansion is being applied for through a Basic Assessment (BA) process and the compilation of an Environmental Management Programme (EMPr); and
- Water Use Licence (WUL) in terms of the National Water Act (Act 36 of 1998) (NWA).
Farms Middelbult 284 Portion 10, 11, 12, 13 and 14, Twistdraai 285 Portion RE/10, RE/7, 4 and 8, Rietvley 320 Portion 20, where the coarse ash stack is situated, may potentially be directly affected by the proposed activities.
The Final Basic Assessment Report has been submitted to the competent authority, the Department of Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment (DFFE) on 14 October 2025.
The Final Water Use Licence Application Summary Report has been submitted to the competent authority, the Department of Water and Sanitation (DWS) on 18 November 2025.
