Announcement and availability of draft report
Sasol South Africa Limited (Sasol) at their Secunda Operations (SO) plant, near Secunda, Govan Mbeki Local Municipality in Mpumalanga is undertaking a Water Use Licence (WUL) application for the proposed Sasol Secunda Boundary Run-off and Seepage, Gas Production West project.
The intent of this project is to reduce the potential for contaminated run-off, process effluent (spillages, wash activities, pipeline failures, etc.), or underground seepage originating from Area 3 (Coal Storage Pad) and Area 4 (Silt Trap and Sump) to impact on water resources.
The Southern Boundary Run-off and Seepage, Gas Production West project’s water use activities will require a WUL in accordance with the water uses as described in Section 21 of the National Water Act (NWA), Act 36 of 1998 (as amended). The following activities will be applied for from the Competent Authority, the Department of Water and Sanitation (DWS).

| Section 21 (c): Impeding or diverting the flow of water in a watercourse | The proposed upgrades to Area 3 and 4 may impact positively on the water quality of the adjacent watercourse due to the diversion of contaminated water away from the watercourse and decrease the flow of contaminated water to the watercourse.
A GN 704 evaluation will be undertaken for the proposed project. |

| Section 21 (g): Disposing of waste in a manner which may detrimentally impact on a water resource | The upgrade to the sump and silt trap (Area 4) and the nature of the material/product stockpiled/stored in situ (as required as part of the plant processing process) in Area 3 may impact on the adjacent watercourse. |
Jones & Wagener (Pty) Ltd Engineering & Environmental Consultants (J&W) has been appointed by Sasol to undertake the application.
